Run Kid Run more than just pop songs – Article

The music of Run Kid Run is catchy, guitar-driven pop-rock. Its players hope, however, that it is also a bit more.

“I hope listeners walk away with being entertained; that they had a good time,” said David Curtis, vocalist-guitarist of the Illinois- and Kentucky-based Christian rock band. “But hopefully, they see our hearts and see this is much more than just music to us.

“We are definitely a Christian band. That’s a huge part of our show,” he added. “We will try not to, by any means, force our beliefs down anyone’s throat, but just encourage them and let then know Jesus Christ has changed our lives. Hopefully, they’re entertained and walk away with a great experience, but also see a little bit more than just pop songs.”

The band — rounded out by guitarist-vocalist Neil Endicott, bassist Paul Stewart and drummer Matt Jackson — hit the Christian rock scene in 2006 with their debut “This is Who We Are.”

In April 2008, the band released “Love at the Core,” a 10-track collection of the band’s quick-riff, melodic pop-punk numbers. It’s sleek, produced, hit-minded tracks with soaring vocals, a sound fans of Fall Out Boy or Panic! At The Disco would quickly recognize.

Void of the occasional innuendo made by those pop-radio chart-toppers, Run Kid Run songs carry a message of hope and love through God, Curtis said.

“I would say that the new record definitely has an overall theme of love,” he said. “That’s mostly love of God; us trying to portray that in human form to other persons or nonbelievers — just like the love from the guy to a girl. I think we believe love is the only thing that can affect the hearts of human beings. Love is the only thing that can move a person’s heart.”

And nothing, Curtis said, can convey the strength of love like song. More than a hammering sermon, a guitar ballad can seep into the hearts and minds of a soul in need.

“Music has such power and whenever you put a living God behind that and use lyrics we believe are God-inspired, you can really draw emotion out of people and hopefully beyond emotion we can change their life,” Curtis said.

Run Kid Run songs have changed lives, Curtis said, and that helps keep the message strong in the hearts of the musicians themselves.

“It is hard at times to not get into the mundane,” he said. “But whenever we connect with an audience, I can feel that. I can see that people are getting it.

“It’s huge for us to think that a little three-chord song can affect someone’s lives, someone’s daily schedule.”
